***This position is as needed in response to natural disasters. Candidates must be local to the impacted area.***

The Shelter Manager and Supervisor oversee shelter operations. These positions are an operational assignment responsible for planning, implementing, overseeing, and supporting the operation of client shelters across the disaster relief operation. The Shelter Manager and Shift Supervisor lead the Shelter teams, and supervise workers assigned to specific shelter tasks and areas of the shelter operation such as Registration Supervisor, Dormitory Supervisor and Recreation Supervisor (General Shelter Workers).

Job Duties and Responsibilities include:

  • Supports shelter staff by providing guidance, and allocation of resources to effectively operate shelters to meet priorities, objectives, and standards.
  • Advises leadership on sheltering needs, trends, and issues.
  • Attends Daily Sheltering Coordination Meetings.
  • Works collaboratively with all functions that support sheltering.
  • Maintains alignment of shelters to current sheltering standards and current procedures.
  • Supports advanced operational planning and development of service delivery plan.
  • May lead a team of administrative staff to effectively support all assigned sheltering workforce, and shelters.
  • Supports the operation of workforce shelters working jointly with Staff Services.
  • May include supervising the delivery of services and assigned workers in one or more of the following areas within the shelter: reception, registration, dormitory, feeding, information, and supply.
  • Ensures that work is carried out in alignment with established shelter principles and practices.
  • Accurately records time worked on all activities in time tracking system of record daily.
  • Reviews the teams time entries and time comments for accuracy.
  • Ensures accurate reporting to meet the client's needs.
  • Ensures the teams quality of service meets the established expectations.
  • Provides coaching and mentoring for team members.
  • Monitors activities in the shelter and alerts Shelter Management to issues and concerns.
  • Participates in all shelter staff meetings, reviews, and completes daily reports.
  • Completes all required trainings.

Qualifications and Skills:

  • Knowledgeable of current standards, procedures, doctrine bulletins, and best practices through regular participation in sheltering management activities.
  • Ability to follow direction and ensure successful completion of assignments.
  • Ability to work in high tress environments and maintain a calming demeanor.
  • Demonstrated leadership ability working collaborative with a management team.
  • Ability to resolve issues, escalate challenges, and request support as needed.
  • Prior experience in disaster recovery (CDBG-DR or FEMA Programs) or mitigation is preferred.
  • Prior experience handling and solving customer complaints, preferred.
  • Experienced in leading, directing, and evaluating shelter workers.
  • Experienced in handling time sensitive issues that may arise in your area of responsibility.
  • Strong communication skills including the ability to read, write, and follow verbal and written instructions in English.
  • Ability to work in an austere environment.
  • Ability to lift 25 pounds independently.
  • Ability to walk, climb or descend stairs, kneel, bend and twist.
  • Ability to pass a drug screen and a background check.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Required Education and Experience:

  • High School Diploma or equivalent
  • 1-2 years of related supervisory experience
  • Valid Driver's License
  • Minimum 18 years of age
