Our Team:

The Vehicle Efficiency Engineering Team (VEE) is one of the engineering teams within the Electrified Propulsion Management and Efficiency (ePME) department at the Hyundai America Technical Center. The VEE team focuses on enhancing vehicle-level efficiency for Hyundai, Kia, and Genesis vehicles and localizing them for North American market needs.

Job Description:

Hyundai America Technical Center, Inc. (HATCI) is currently seeking a vehicle energy efficiency development engineer in the vehicle energy efficiency (VEE) team at our Superior Township, MI facility. This position will support HATCI's vehicle energy efficiency development efforts, off-cycle credit analysis and testing programs, and real-world and certification fuel economy testing during vehicle development.

Vehicle energy efficiency engineers are responsible for vehicle testing, simulation, data analysis, benchmarking, identification of industry trends, analysis of internal and external test results and development and testing of fuel/energy efficiency concepts on vehicles.

Core Responsibilities:

  • Test and validate development vehicle fuel economy according to EPA test procedures for internal combustion engine, hybrid and battery electric vehicles
  • Establish and support targets for vehicle energy efficiency (MPG or MPGe) through testing and analysis of current and future vehicles
  • Benchmark key competitive vehicles and related propulsion system technologies
  • Analyze competitive data sets and assess future trends in passenger vehicle fuel economy and energy efficiency-related technologies
  • Develop and maintain efficiency test procedures for ICE, xHEV and BEV
  • Simulate vehicle energy flows, losses and road loads
  • Collaboration with and support for teams in global R&D headquarters in South Korea
  • Travel both domestically and internationally (up to 10%)

Core Capabilities:

  • Proven experience in vehicle testing for fuel economy and/or emissions
  • Understanding of and experience executing EPA fuel economy test procedures
  • Familiarity with EPA greenhouse gas emissions standards for passenger cars and light trucks, including corporate average fuel economy and GHG credits
  • Experience and detailed understanding of vehicle propulsion systems, including internal combustion engine, hybrid and BEV configurations
  • Basic understanding of conventional, hybrid and electric vehicle energy flows, including drive energy, energy losses (friction, aerodynamic, etc.), thermal loads, and energy conversion efficiency
  • Experience with and strong understanding of simulation of vehicles and propulsion subsystems for virtual development activities, and vehicle model development and validation with test data
  • Ability to analyze and visualize vehicle and test facility data using tools such as MATLAB
  • Working level knowledge of vehicle testing tools such as ETAS INCA and CAN bus monitoring applications such at Vector CANalyzer or similar
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively with management, executive staff, and peers

Basic Qualifications:

  • Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or other related engineering degree from an accredited university
  • 5+ years of total automotive industry experience in one or more of the following areas: (1) instrumenting and testing of the vehicle propulsion and related systems, (2) evaluating conventional, mHEV, FHEV, PHEV, and BEV performance, emissions, and fuel economy/efficiency test data, (3) supporting vehicle simulation and model-based development.
  • Valid driver's license and satisfactory driving record

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master of Science in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or other related engineering degree from an accredited university
  • 7+ years of total automotive industry experience in one or more of the following areas: (1) instrumentation and testing of vehicle propulsion and related systems, (2) evaluating mHEV, FHEV, PHEV, and BEV performance, emissions, and fuel economy/efficiency test data, (3) supporting vehicle simulation and model-based development.
  • Experience with data acquisition and analysis tools such as ETAS/INCA
  • Experience with model-based development tools such as MATLAB/Simulink
  • Experience with 1-D physical modeling tools such as AVL-Cruise, GT-Suite
  • Knowledge and experience in vehicle control systems and calibration procedures
